InkooShipping - Port of Inkoo

Environment and waste management

The new law on environmental management which came into force during the year 2000 provided that all ports must apply for an environmental permit for their activities. The port gave its application to the authorities at the end of the year 2000, and the licence was permitted at the end of the year 2003. A complaint was, however, lodged against the licence, and now when the complaint procedure has been finished, a new apply for an environmental permit will be given to the authorities.

As the port mainly handles different type of bulk materials, the environmental policy of the port is concentrated to minimizing of dusting, to decreasing and proper handling of cargo residues and waste, and to control of noise problems.

The port follows the recommendations of the Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission and the acts concerning the prevention of pollution of sea from ships.

All discharge to the sea is prohibited in the port area.

The port has a waste management plan and directives, which base on the receipt of sorted, solid wastes. Solid waste to be sorted into: energy waste (paper, wood, board, burnable plastic), metal, glass and mixed waste (unsorted waste).
