Environment and waste management

The port complies with the recommendations and regulations of the Baltic Sea Environmental Protection Commission regarding the prevention of marine pollution. Our waste management plan can be found here. The Maritime Environmental Protection Act requires that ships must deposit all original waste and cargo residues at the port's reception facilities in accordance with the unloading regulations based on the MARPOL Convention. The ship must submit a notification at least 24 hours before arrival or immediately upon departure from the previous port if the voyage takes less than 24 hours. The notification informs the port of entry what types of original waste and cargo residues it is depositing. The notification is made in accordance with the format approved by the Finnish Transport Safety Agency to the PortNet system. The waste notification is submitted to the ship clearance department by email. Based on the notification, service providers are ordered for waste for which there is no reception point in the port. This does not apply to ships exempted from the obligation to deposit ship-generated waste (a certificate of exemption must be presented to the port). Ships are charged a ship-generated waste fee in accordance with the port's waste price list, regardless of whether the ship deposits ship-generated waste in the port or not.

All discharges into the sea are prohibited in the port area.

The port has a waste management plan and instructions based on the reception of sorted solid waste. You can access the waste management instructions here and the sorting instructions here. There are waste containers for the following waste types:

  • metal waste
  • glass packaging
  • plastic packaging
  • solid oily waste
  • paper
  • cardboard
  • cooking oil
  • biowaste
  • mixed waste
  • batteries/accumulators
  • SER waste
  • paints / solvents

FOOD WASTE, NON-EU TRAFFIC

Food waste from ships arriving in port from non-EU countries is collected directly from the ships according to pre-orders. The waste must be packed in yellow bags, in which it is taken for processing.

PROBLEM OR HARMFUL WASTE

Hazardous waste will be collected from the ship based on prior notification. The actual costs for handling hazardous waste will be charged, plus 20% as port overhead costs.

WASTE DISPOSAL FEES

The waste management fee is charged based on the net tonnage of the vessel.
